The orphanage volunteer program in Tanzania is dedicated and focused on working for the welfare and development of underprivileged children in Arusha. Volunteers interested in working for the orphanage program get placements in different orphanages and street children projects in and around the region of Dar es Salaam. Due to the widespread disease of HIV/ AIDS, many children have become homeless in Tanzania and other African countries. The extended families of these children are forced to send the children to such orphanages. Volunteering with children in an orphanage is the most rewarding experience. If you choose to do volunteer work in orphanages, you need to be adaptable, flexible and prepared to face and hear heartbreaking stories of the children's backgrounds. In a typical project placement, there are around 30-40 children in the age group of 3-18 years.
- Gain a lifetime of amazing memories
- Care for orphaned and disadvantaged children
- Make lifelong friends
- Minimum age of 18 years
What Does The Project Do?
The prevalence of HIV / AIDS has led to almost one million of Tanzania’s children becoming orphans, and there are many more from different backgrounds. The families and communities who work so hard to help support the local orphanages are being stretched to their limits and are constrained by a lack of time and resources. A Tanzanian orphan's only support and care may come from an older brother or sister, who could be as young as just 10 years old. As a result, many orphans are unable to go to school, and many have to live on the street. They get forced into child labour, domestic service or even the illegal sex trade.
The orphanages that have been set up and are run by both local and overseas volunteers are often the only chance these children have of getting off the streets and receiving food, care and affection. On this project you can offer children otherwise destined for a life of poverty and misery a future full of possibilities. This is why our orphanage projects are especially important and why you are guaranteed to be inspired and motivated by the sight of these young children smiling up at you in return for you simply being there.
What Will I Be Doing?
Your work schedule will cover an engaging, varied and enjoyable programme working within an orphanage, inspiring your creativity and initiative. As well as providing care for the orphans, local orphanages often also provide a day care nursery function and additional support for disadvantaged children who are in need of care and attention. You will play with the children and keep them engaged through games, arts and crafts, sports, English lessons, music lessons and even health and HIV awareness seminars, all in order to ensure they receive support and education otherwise unavailable to them.
Additionally you will help with the running of the orphanage itself including preparing and serving food, cleaning and helping the orphanage staff with a variety of other duties. Flexibility is important to ensure you get the most positive and comprehensive experience while on your project. You should be prepared to use your own initiative while you are working on your project, however if you need assistance in initiating any activities, the local staff will be more than happy to advise and assist you.
You will be welcomed at every turn by smiling and enthusiastic people. Whatever activities you get involved in, you are sure to gain huge satisfaction from helping and inspiring these underprivileged children whilst significantly enhancing your own skills and experience. You can make a lasting contribution to your school or orphanage by taking part in our book initiative. All you have to do is bring /books and it will be donated to the orphanage.
You will be collected from the airport in Dar es Salaam by your project coordinator staff and transported to your accommodation. Once you have had time to rest the local staff will introduce you to your project and the local area. You’re in country coordinator will be more than happy to help you settle in and acclimatize and you'll feel at home,
Where will I be staying?
You will be staying in a volunteer eco-house on the coast, to the north of Dar es Salaam. Based within a small local village the volunteer facilities are basic but comfortable and clean. You will be sharing a room with other volunteers, where you will have access to bucket showers and dry toilets. Wifi access will usually be available for a small fee.
What will I be eating?
You will be provided with breakfast and dinner as most volunteers are away from the accommodation at lunchtime at their projects. There are plenty of places for you to buy food in the local villages and this is an excellent way to experience true local street cuisine. Food in Tanzania is generally simple, consisting of vegetables, beans or meat with rice or ugali, a common staple food in eastern and southern Africa made from maize flour.
Weekly, please aim to arrive on the Saturday before your project begins on Monday.
This project is not available during following days:
December 25th to January 2nd.
There will be no project during Easter, however some alternative activities can be organized.
All volunteers are given an orientation about their project and the location by the local coordinator.
Accommodation is offered in the safe area of Mbande just outside Dar es Salaam city and close to the airport. You will be staying with your coordinator kitchen supervisor and other volunteers please expect to share a room with other volunteers.
Accommodation is enough with a living room/dining room, as well as kitchen. It accommodates up to 4 volunteers in 2 different rooms and 1 bathrooms with a secure wall and gate to make sure you are as safe as possible.
Please bring a towel for personal use. Mosquito nets are also provided on most beds, but you can bring your own nets. If you don’t have enough space in your suitcase; it is cheap to buy things locally.
The accommodation can be basic, standards are very different on Tanzania than back home most probably,
Within easy reach you will find the main road with food stalls to buy fresh juices and fruits (local doughnuts) and any other basic needs. Within 20 minutes’ walk you can find bars with fast internet and supermarket with some imported (and expensive) goodies to treat yourself every now and then.
All free time activities are at participant’s own expense.
You can join the project in Tanzania for one, two or three weeks. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
